The Dark Wizard is a four-part HBO documentary series created by Sender Films (The Alpinist, The Dawn Wall, Valley Uprising and Reel Rock) telling the unbelievable life story of Dean Potter, the world’s most influential and controversial climber. Dean was a pioneer in free-solo rock climbing, BASE jumping, and highline walking – where the consequences of a single mistake could mean certain death.

Drawing on in-depth interviews and an extensive archive of footage and personal journals, Dean’s journey begins in his early years living in a van, scraping for food and climbing for the pure love of adventure, continuing through his meteoric rise to the elite tier of outdoor sports and culminating in his final, fateful act.

Through bitter rivalries, media scandals, clashes with authorities and near-death experiences, The Dark Wizard is an unflinching portrait of a brilliant but tortured artist of adventure, who drew on his inner turmoil to empower feats of creativity and daring unlike anything the world had ever seen.
