Bogumił Słama

My adventure with mountains and mountaineering began early. During my holidays in Zakopane I met Aleksander Schiele-one of the seniors of Polish mountain climbing, a man who took part in rescue in Jaworowa Valley in which Kilmek Bachleda died. He so beautifully and passionately talked about the mountains and the people who hiked there that after the holidays I knew one thing: I want to be a man of the mountains. I want to be a mountain climber. And so it stayed with me for life. I was 10 years old then.
First, my hiking in the Tatra Mountains was a romantic adventure, a kind of “spiritual food”. It did, however, happen that in the end I fell into the clutches of professional mountaineering. I climbed difficult routes in the Tatra Mountains, the Alps and the mountains of Asia. I took part in expeditions to Karakoram, Himalayas and Pamir, as well as to the mountains of Iran and Turkey. Many times I was a participant of the so-called “central camps” of the Polish Mountaineering Association (PZA). I practised rock and ice climbing. In short, I have enjoyed all forms of mountaineering.
Over time, my passion became my profession. As an instructor of the Polish Mountaineering Association I have for a long time dealt with the basic mountaineering training as well as with training future instructors. For twenty years I was Director of the Training Centre of PZA , the “Betlejemka” hut in Hala Gąsienicowa. In the 1990s along with a group of friends we established the Polish Association of High Mountain Guides. Then, after completing the training, I got the qualifications of the IVBV high mountain guide, allowing me to carry out comprehensive guide activities and training in the mountains of the world. I also have a state sports instructor degree-mountaineering.
Using my skills and qualifications, I run all kinds of climbing courses and offer guide services enabling ascent s of Tatras and Alpine peaks via touristic and climbing routes.
In my free time I climb in summer and winter, in rocks and mountains, and go on-piste and off-piste skiing. What I do is still makes me happy.
I live in Zakopane.
