Janusz Gołąb

Janusz Gołąb (born November 16, 1967) -a Polish alpine and high-altitude climber, the first person to climb Gasherbrum I (8080 m a.s.l.) in winter (March 9, 2012).
He is a member of the Alpine Club Gliwice, has climbed since 1986. Together with Jacek Fluder and Stanisław Piecuch formed a climbing team which quickly got the nickname “Dream Team”. They were later joined by Grzegorz Skorek (1978-2004). In the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century they made some of the finest alpine-style climbs in the history of Polish alpinism.
Activity in the Himalayas:
1999-Kedar Dome in the Garhwal Himalayas, a new route on the great wall of Kedar Dome, the ascent took 3 days (with Jack Fluder and Stanisław Piecuch). July-August 2003 – Khunyang Chhish East (7400 m), an attempt to climb one of the few pristine 7-thousanders in the Karakoram range. Climbing (with Stanislaw Piecuch and Grzegorz Skorek) on 15-18 August, in alpine style, at the height of approx. 6700 m they reached the base of the rock monolith crowning a nearly 3-km high wall.
In the summer of 2004 he climbed in the Tian Shan mountains. Together with Grzegorz Skorek they attempted a very difficult (over 2 km high) north face of Khan Tengri (7010 m) with the intention to lead a new road. During the weather breakdown while retreating from the wall, tragedy happened. On July 18, when rapelling down, Grzegorz Skorek fell together with the blocks of rock from which the belay site was set up. Hurt by three avalanches during nine repels, despite a leg injury, Janusz Gołąb reached the wall base where he had a bivouac without any equipment, and the next day arrived at the base camp.
On March 9, 2012, at approximately 08:30 local time, Janusz Gołąb and Adam Bielecki made the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum I (8068 m) in Karakoram, Pakistan. This is the 11th eight-thousander climbed in winter and the 2nd in the Karakoram range. The ascent was made without the use of oxygen, via the Japanese route from the North-West side. It was within the framework of the expedition organized by the Polish Mountaineering Association (PZA) and led by Artur Hajzer.
He climbed K2 on July 31, 2014.
